Rotary Club of Hillcrest-Sunrise Rotarian of the Year 2014-2015: Joe Skoda

Posted by Ryan Knotts on Jul 17, 2015
It is my pleasure, in conjunction with the past immediate three winners of the Rotary Club of Hillcrest-Sunrise Rotarian of the Year award (Fred Havlice, George Hughes, and myself), to announce this year’s Rotarian of the Year.  This annual award is designated for the one Rotarian in our club who clearly stands out in demonstrating "Service Above Self," and principled commitment to the Four-Way Test. A nominee should be an outstanding club member who has made significant contributions to the mission and operation of our club, and to one or more avenues of Community or International Service. The ‘Rotarian of the Year’ award may be given to a member who exhibits “Service Above Self” in their daily activities and who promotes Rotary by their actions and involvements. This may be accomplished through one major activity in club service, in multiple activities, or by serving on several committees. This person should be highly visible in the weekly activities of the club.  Our club makes a donation of $1,000 to the Rotary International Foundation in honor of the recipient for a Paul Harris Fellow recognition.

Rotary Club of Hillcrest-Sunrise Club Goals 2015-2016 & Theme

Posted by Ryan Knotts on Jul 06, 2015
For the 2015-2016 Rotary Year, my theme will be: Engagement in Rotary

Engage yourself
Engage each other
Engage our local community
Engage our world

Each of us comes to Rotary for a different purpose whether it be to build business connections, to find opportunities to give back and serve our communities, or to develop fellowship and lasting relationships.  For most of us, it is the giving back that resonates the most.  However, the relationships we develop, with each other and our communities, keep us engaged.  With all things, we get out of Rotary what we put into our efforts.

For each ouf us, it is a personal choice as to how much effort we put into Rotary, or engage.  My goal, as club president, and in conjunction with our skilled leadership team is to continue developing a dynamic club where members have multiple opportunities to choose their engagement through service and social opportunities.

With a dynamic club, we hope to continue growing our membership. As we grow our membership with high quality, new members, we will be able to commit to more service projects, raise more money, and develop more connections which will allow us to positively impact our communities, local and international.

Here our our club goals for 2015-2016:

The Rotary Club of Hillcrest Conducts a Thanksgiving Food Drive

Posted by Janet Schiciano

With the Thanksgiving Holiday just around the corner, The Rotary Club of Hillcrest conducted a holiday food drive.  Rotarians donated food items that were then assembled into Thanksgiving baskets and distributed to the needy families in the Hillcrest area.   Each basket also contained a grocery store Gift Card, so that teach family could purchase their Turkey as well! We were able to collect enough food to also donate some items to a local food pantry.

The Rotary Club of Hillcrest recently partnered with the Feed My Starving Children, a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding God’s children hungry in body and spirit. The approach is simple: children and adults hand-pack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children, and these meal packs are shipped to nearly 70 countries around the world.  Several Rotarians donated their time at the Cornerstone Community Church to help with assembling mobile packs.

The Rotary Club of Hillcrest Supports the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland

Posted by Janet Schiciano

The Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland has been serving as a home away from home for families, whose children stay in area hospitals, since September of 1979. The Ronald McDonald House provides the following amenities: guest rooms, handicapped facilities, a large kitchen, a sunroom, a children’s play room, a club house, laundry facilities, a family resource center, family office, library, living rooms, garden, and a playground.Image

The Rotary Club of Hillcrest Sunrise  supports the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland through providing meals to families. On November 2nd, several Rotarians volunteered at RMH. This is a great way for us to demonstrate service above self and to engage in club fellowship by volunteering together. Perhaps, because we have a lot of foodies in our club, we always enjoy utilizing our culinary talents to benefit others. There is something about creating a delicious and nutritious meal for others when the resulting and immediate effect is clearly visible.

The Mayfield Middle School Community is to be commended!  Through the hard work of administrators, teachers and a cast of students, $3,600 was raised by hosting a haunted house at the Middle School during the 2012 Halloween season.  At the November 20th meeting, the Hillcret Rotary Sunrise Club heard from Middle School Principal, Paul Destino, teachers, Sandy Bean and Kerry Rutigliano, and students, Austin Bean and Christopher Giancola, about the planning and teamwork that took place to design and host this most successful event.  A DVD of the highlights was also shown.

New Superintendent of Mayfield Schools and Hillcrest Rotarian, Dr. Keith Kelly, acknowledged the group for their creativity and dedication.  The club responded with a standing ovation!  We are all very proud of their amazing talents and generosity!

Taking Food Inventory at Providence House

By: Tony Corrao - Membership Chair

ImageOn Saturday morning, June 15, four Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Hillcrest Sunrise, visited Providence House which is located on W 32 st in Cleveland. With the guidance of Bobby Richards, Facilities Manager, Cindy Ginsburg, Joe Delibero, Fred Havlice and Tony Corrao took inventory on thousands of food items. They ranged from baby food to canned fruits and vegetables. Annual inventory is currently required and going forward, the non- profit will be taking inventory on a quarterly basis.

"Thank you Hillcrest Rotary! You saved us at least two days of work" said Bobby Richards. "You will always be welcome at Providence House ".

Providence House was founded in 1981 and is Ohio's first licensed crisis nursery. It is a 501(c) 3 non - profit that provides emergency shelter and care to neglected children due to a family crisis. The children range in age from newborn to age 6. Currently, there are 11 children being cared for. SB 242 allows for the provision of residency at Providence House for up to 90 days. The average stay is approximately 32 days.

Their model goes beyond emergency shelter for children and includes a range of case management and supportive services for both children and their families. Their goal is to stabilize, strengthen and reunify each family.

It receives its funding from individuals, foundations and corporations.

Family Picnic at Lyndhurst Splash Park

Posted by Derek Nevar
Members of The Rotary Club of Hillcrest - Sunrise brought their families together for a fun-filled picnic at Lyndhurst Splash Park. All visitors on Sunday, July 22nd were able to enjoy the refreshing relief of Splash Park amenities on a hot Summer day courtesy of Lyndhurst Mayor and Club President, Joe Cicero, Jr., who waived admission fees for the day.

Image 'Morning Crew' members Fred Havlice, Tom Mugridge and Mike Johns, Jr. arrived at 8am to make preparations for the day (shown at left enjoying some much deserved R&R). By the time the rest of the members and families began to arrive, the barbecue was already hot and the refreshments were on ice. In addition to the standard picnic fare, members contributed their favorite side dishes and donated their specialty desserts for a unique Dessert Auction. The most mouth-watering items started bidding wars and even brought about a 'don't-even-think-about-it' staredown in the direction of a rival bidder from a member's typically reserved spouse (Bonnie Delibero's dessert was at the center of this friendly standoff).

ImageClub member and director of picnic operations, Tony Corrao, is shown at right with his wife Tina in pursuit of balloon race winners (Chris and Noelle Scheuer - center) and runners-up (Kris and Keith Packard - right). The excitement of the balloon race, which concluded with team members popping the balloon between their bodies, was preceded by a hard-boiled egg roll (using feet only) that brought out the competitive spirit in everyone. Winners of the individual and team competitions received movie passes for their athletic prowess. The day was a success and many thanks to the committee members and attendees that made it possible!

Rotary Club of Hillcrest Members Recognized

Posted by Janet Schiciano

Stephen Zabor recently visited the Rotary Club of Hillcrest (Sunrise) and presented several club members with prestigious awards.

ImageKathleen Mekesa was recognized with the A.Z. Baker Award for her leadership of our club this past year.  Qualifying for the A.Z. Baker Award is a significant achievement and reflects broad based service to building stronger and more sustainable communities locally and around the world. Kathleen was congratulated for the service the Rotary Club of Hillcrest Sunrise provided in the 2011-2012 Rotary year.

Jackie Minotas was recognized with the Paul Harris Fellow award.  The PAUL HARRIS Fellow is an award given to thosImagee who have given $1000 dollars possibly over several years to the foundation or by a sponsor that has given the money in someone’s name for extraordinary services rendered.  It is one of the most prestigious awards in Rotary and thereby named after the founder of Rotary, Paul Harris.

Giving any sum of money to the Rotary Foundation makes you a part of the eradication of Polio, a partner in creating PEACE, a person who supports Clean Water and Sanitation where water is worth more than gold, it is measured in LIVES. It makes you someone who believes that all babies, children and mom's should have good medical resources, micro-credit and equal rights.

Mike Johns Jr. was recognized for his role in creating, editing and distributing the District Newsletter. The District Newsletter is one of the main forms of communication within District 6630.  Mike took over the compiling and editing of the newsletter a number of years ago and has brought it to a new level.  His dedication and persistence in searching out pertinent articles and timely information from the various clubs in the district has proven invaluable to the leadership of the district as well as the club presidents who utilize the newsletter for information gathering.

Community Garden Project

Posted by Janet Schiciano

ImageThe Rotary Club of Hillcrest-Sunrise has teamed with the City of Lyndhurst to create a community garden. The club utilized an empty lot site that was dedicated to the project by Lyndhurst.  The Rotarians planted the garden with the plans of donating the produce to low-income Tri-City Consortium on Aging seniors. The community garden project is another way for Rotarians to help support the local communities it serves.
